With SmartOTDR, generic or user-defined setup configurations eliminate setup errors and maintain result consistency. One-touch operation and single result window ensure fast and easy measurement, while robust wireless connectivity options increase productivity anywhere. Multiple connectivity options (3G/4G smartphone via USB and optional Bluetooth/WiFi) enable remote control as well as data and work-order transfer to and from tablets, smartphones, and computers.

Viavi Smart OTDR 100AS quickly resolves field issues in real-time, and the optional Smart Access Anywhere (SAA) can open a tunnel in the cloud so that a technician can access and operate equipment remotely. It is also compatible with a wide range of cloud servers (WebDAV service providers), and can also quickly share measurement reports using the onboard FastReport .pdf report generation.

The Viavi SmartOTDR includes a one-year trial of cloud-based StrataSync for the asset, configuration, and test data management, and to ensure all devices have the latest software and options installed.

The Viavi 100AS Smart OTDR combines all the necessary fiber tests in one hand with an optical power meter (OPM) and visual fault locator (VFL) with P5000i microscope options and simplifies OTDR analysis with Smart Link Mapper (SLM) options. Ease of upgrade in the field automates testing with objective, pass/fail results. In addition, it enhances productivity anywhere with powerful network connectivity options.

The Viavi Smart OTDR 100AS is a lightweight, compact, hands-free design that includes a 5-inch high-visibility outdoor touch screen. And it is also integrated with macro bend detection with CW light source, automatic fiber inspection, and pass/fail analysis software. What is OTDR?

An optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) is a precision instrument used to detect events or faults along with a fiber link, typically within an optical communications network. It injects a series of optical pulses into the fiber under test and, from the same end of the fiber, the light that is scattered or reflected from points along with the fiber. The scattered and/or reflected light that is collected back is used to characterize the optical fiber. This electronic time-domain meter is a similar method of measuring reflections due to changes in the impedance of the cable under test. The strength of the return pulse is measured and integrated as a function of time and plotted as a function of fiber length.

What is OTDR used for?

The Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) is useful for testing the integrity of fiber optic cables. It can verify splice loss, measure the length and find defects. OTDR is also commonly used to photograph fiber optic cable when it is newly installed.

How does an OTDR work?

OTDR sends a pulse of light energy (optical power) generated by a laser diode into one end of an optical fiber. A photodiode measures the returning light energy or optical power (reflected and scattered) over time and converts it into an electrical value that is sampled, amplified, and displayed graphically on a screen. The location of each incident and the overall cable length is calculated based on the round-trip time of the light pulse traveling through the fiber core. The insertion loss is calculated from the amplitude change proportional to the backscattered light.

Many modern OTDR devices automatically select the optimal acquisition parameter for a particular fiber by sending a test pulse in a process called auto-configuration, auto-setup, or autotest. Despite advanced technology that now allows many OTDR testing systems to automatically determine the best settings for your testing process, it is still important to understand what the underlying settings are and how they can affect your results.
